Hurricane-rated garage doors in Miami

The garage door is usually the biggest opening in the house, and one of the first places a storm tests. Every new door we install carries Miami-Dade product approval (an NOA) for wind, and we show you its approval number before you buy.

What a Miami-Dade NOA means

Miami-Dade County runs its own product approval for building parts in the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone. A Notice of Acceptance, or NOA, says a door model passed the county’s testing and spells out what it is approved for and how it has to be installed. A new garage door in Miami-Dade must carry one. Before you buy, we show you the approval number of the exact model, so you can look it up yourself.

Wind-rated and impact-rated are not the same thing

A wind rating is about pressure: how hard the wind can push and pull on the door. An impact rating means the model also passed testing against flying debris. The NOA says which ratings a model has. We go through it with you before you choose, so you know what your door is rated for and not just what it looks like.

Is your current door rated?

Many Miami homes still have the door that came with the house. Look for a label on the inside of the door or along the track that names the maker and the approval. No label, or a door that is bent, patched or missing its reinforcement, is worth having checked. On a Planned Visit the technician looks at the door, the tracks, the springs and the opener and tells you honestly whether it needs a repair or a replacement.

Before a storm

Close the door all the way and lock it; never leave it part way open. An opener with battery backup keeps working when the power goes out, and it helps to know where your manual release is. A door that is off track, has a broken spring or does not close tight should be fixed before the season, not during the warning. If it fails right before a storm, book a Same-Day Rescue: $145 for homes, $185 for businesses, 24/7.

Rated does not have to mean plain

Wind-rated does not mean giving up on style. We go through the approved models in the look you like, from carriage-house and wood-look to modern designs, and confirm the NOA of the one you pick before you buy. The price comes before anything is built.

Questions

Does my garage door need to be hurricane-rated in Miami?

Yes. Miami-Dade is a High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, so a new garage door must carry Miami-Dade product approval (an NOA) for wind. Every new door we install is an approved, wind-rated model, and we show you its approval number before you buy.

Is wind-rated the same as impact-rated?

Not always. Wind rating is about pressure; impact rating means the door also passed debris testing. The NOA states which ratings a model has, and we go through it with you before you choose.

Can you check my current door?

Yes. A Planned Visit is $65, Monday to Saturday, 8 AM to 5 PM, and it comes off the total if you go ahead with a repair or a new door.

My door broke right before a storm. Can you come now?

Book a Same-Day Rescue: $145 for homes, $185 for businesses, with a technician usually there in 45–90 minutes. The repair is priced before work starts.
